On May 5 and 6, the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) was visited by a team from the Laboratoire d’Études en Géophysique et Océanographie Spatiales (LEGOS), based in Toulouse (France), with the aim of establishing a strategic collaboration between them.

The French delegation, led by Dr. Rafael Almar, leader of the LEGOS LITTORAL team, was composed of pre-doctoral researchers Marius Aparicio, Marcan Graffin, Amelie Arias and Salome Frugier. During their stay in Santander, they held working meetings with members of different research groups of IHCantabria, in which synergies and lines of scientific cooperation were identified, especially in the fields of satellite remote sensing and coastal dynamics.

LEGOS is a joint research unit under the aegis of CNES, CNRS, IRD and the University of Toulouse, specialized in oceanography, the water cycle and the interactions between ocean, atmosphere, ice and coastal systems. Her experience in the study of the marine environment from an integrated and spatial perspective reinforces her affinity with the research lines developed at IHCantabria.

The visit was coordinated by Paula Gomes da Silva, Ana Silió and Jara Martínez, who welcomed the visiting team and showed them around the institute’s facilities. Researchers Omar Gutiérrez, Camilo Jaramillo, Itxaso Odériz and María Maza also participated in the technical sessions. The visit concluded with a session to define the framework for inter-institutional cooperation between IHCantabria and the LEGOS LITTORAL team, with the participation of Raul Medina, general director of IHCantabria.

This meeting has allowed progress to be made in the design of future joint initiatives that will contribute to strengthening international research in key areas for adaptation to climate change and sustainable coastal management, such as space-based monitoring and numerical modeling of coastal systems.
