Biography

Raul Medina is the Vice-president of the Environmental Hydraulics Institute Foundation; Director of the Ocean & Coastal Research Group (1996-2007) and Full Professor of coastal engineering at the Universidad de Cantabria (1993); Doctor in Civil Engineering (Universidad de Cantabria). Since 2011 is the General Director of the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics (IHCantabria), having been director of the Oceanographic and Coastal Engineering Research Group for the years 1996-2011 and member of the Scientific and Doctoral Commission of the Universidad de Cantabria for 10 years. 

He has published 14 book chapters, more than 70 papers in scientific journals and more than 160 conference proceedings on these subjects. He has been the main researcher in projects funded by Spanish CICYT, European Union as well as by several Spanish public administrations (State Ports Authority, Directorate General for Coasts, etc.).

He is also Scientific Advisor of the Inter-American Development Bank, Reviewer of European Union INCO, MAST Projects and ANEP Projects, Reviewer of several national and international scientific journals, Member of the Scientific and Doctorate Commission of the Universidad de Cantabria. 

He has developed tools and methodologies that are currently used in many countries around the world, including the Coastal Modeling System, SMC, with more than 580 companies and user institutions in 56 countries. He has co-founded an EBT aimed at marine renewable energy research with 6 patents.

For his research activity, he has received the National Prize for the Environment, twice.
