IHCantabria had an outstanding participation in the 38th International Coastal Engineering Conference, ICCE 2024
On September 12th, within the framework of ICCE 2024, Professor Robert A. Dalrymple held a memorial in honor of Miguel Losada Rodriguez in Rome, Italy
This is the most important international event in the field of coastal engineering, in which 17 representatives of IHCantabria took part, an ASCE award was presented to Iñigo Losada and a memorial was offered in honor of Miguel Losada
Researchers from the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) participated this week in the 38th International Conference on Coastal Engineering (ICCE 2024), held in Rome, Italy, from September 8th to 14th.
ICCE 2024 program topics included historical coastal and harbor engineering experience in the Mediterranean, protection against storm waves, tsunamis and sea level rise, beach nourishment projects, wave energy converters, and large barriers for flood defenses, among others.
On Thursday morning, September 12th, within the program of this event, the Research Director of IHCantabria, Iñigo Losada, presented a keynote lecture at the Teatro Quirino of the Pontifical Gregorian University, under the title: “Coastal adaptation and resilience: The greatest challenge of coastal engineering”. This was followed, on the same stage, by a commemorative event in honor of the memory of Miguel Losada Rodríguez (1947 – 2024).
This memorial was in charge of Robert A. Dalrymple, distinguished Professor of Coastal Engineering at Northwestern University (USA) and permanent honorary member of the IHCantabria Scientific Committee. During his speech, Dalrymple highlighted the professional career of Miguel Losada, as well as the great impact that his work had on coastal engineering, inside and outside Spain.
He also referred to other facets and capabilities of Miguel Losada and to the great friendship that united them for a long time.
Successful participation of IHCantabria researchers at ICCE 2024
During the inaugural session of ICCE 2024, held last September 9, the Executive Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awarded Íñigo Losada the International Coastal Engineering Award, which is the highest worldwide recognition in the specialty of coastal engineering.
In representation of IHCantabria, the following researchers also participated at ICCE with communications: Moisés Álvarez Cuesta,
Iñigo Aniel-Quiroga Zorrilla, Gabriel Barajas Ojeda, Lucas De Freitas Pereira, Camila De Sá Cotrim, Gabriel Díaz Hernández, María Fuentes Álvarez de Eulate, Paula Gomes Da Silva, Camilo Jaramillo Cardona, Javier López Lara, David Lucio Fernández, María E. Maza Fernández, Paula Núñez Pérez, Itxaso Oderiz Martínez, Mariana Roldán Upegui and Alessandro Romano.
On September 8th, Javier López Lara, María Maza, Gabriel Barajas Ojeda and Alessandro Romano offered one of the short courses taught at ICCE 2024, focused on “Numerical Modeling in Coastal Engineering – IHFOAM”.
Organization of ICCE 2024
The ICCE 2024 celebration was organized by the Italian local committee, composed of Prof. Leopoldo Franco and Prof. Giorgio Bellotti, with the support of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI).
Created in 2000, COPRI is an institute of ASCE, an international organization with more than 160,000 members from 177 countries.
COPRI’s services are designed to complement ASCE’s traditional civil engineering base and to attract non-engineering professionals seeking to enhance their professional and technical development in their field.
