The 10th Doctoral Conference of the IH2O Program of the EDUC was held in the Auditorium of IHCantabria
The PhD program in “Coastal Engineering, Hydrobiology and Management of Aquatic Systems of the University of Cantabria” (IH2O Programme) celebrated last week (July 8 to 10) the X Doctoral Conference, in the auditorium ofl Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of the University of Cantabria (IHCantabria)bringing together doctoral students, faculty and members of the evaluation committees.
In these conferences, open to the public in a hybrid format, doctoral students present, in front of a specific committee for 10 minutes, the progress of their research plans and their DAD, composed of representatives of the Academic Committee, the teachers of the line of research and doctoral research staff external to the program. Each presentation is followed by a constructive discussion between the speaker and the committee, which facilitates the standardized evaluation of their training progress.
The event was inaugurated on Monday with the presence of the Vice Rector for Research and Science Policy, Carlos Beltrán Álvarez, and the Coordinator of the IH2O Doctoral Program, José A. Juanes de la Peña and on Wednesday, with the closing ceremony by the Rector of the Universidad de Cantabria, Ángel Pazos Carro.
In addition, there were three guest lectures, which were delivered by Alberto Ruiz Jimeno, Professor Emeritus of the UC and first director of the EDUC, Ana B. Marín-Arroyo, PTU of the Department of Prehistory and Head of the “EvoAdapta” Group, and Laura Concostrina Zubiri, Ramón y Cajal Contract Researcher (2023) at IHCantabria. In their presentations, the three speakers provided the research trainees of the program with three different, yet complementary, visions of the world of research and research careers in Spain.
In each session, eleven presentations were scheduled by the doctoral students of the three lines of research included in the Program: “Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering”, “Climate, Climate Change and Coastal Infrastructures” and “Hydrobiology and Environmental Management”. Tuesday’s session was fully dedicated to the presentations corresponding to the first year doctoral students, who submitted their research plan for approval. In total, 32 presentations were made, corresponding to the 41 active doctoral students registered in the IH2O program in the current academic year 2023/24.
As in previous editions, several prizes were awarded to the best presentations in each line of research, which this year went to: Katerine E. Ticse de la Torre (L1. Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering); Camila De Sá Cotrim and Dina Gómez Rave (L2. Climate, Coastal and Hydraulic Engineering). (L2. Climate, Climate Change and Infrastructures); and André Chagas da Costa Neves (L3. Hydrobiology and Environmental Management). In addition, a prize was awarded for the best presentation by first-year doctoral students, which was given to David Galán, of the Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering Line.
