This week, 34 students of the IH20 Doctoral Programme presented the progress of their research on coastal engineering, hydrobiology and management of aquatic systems
From June 30 to July 2, the Auditorium of the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) was the venue for the XI Conference of the Doctoral Programme in “Coastal Engineering, Hydrobiology and Management of Aquatic Systems (IH2O)” of the Universidad de Cantabria (UC).
These annual conferences have become a fundamental space for the academic and scientific follow-up of the students of this doctoral program, as well as for the dialogue between researchers in training, professors of the program and researchers of the two collaborating centers (FIHAC, CSIC-IEO).
A space for the exchange of scientific experiences
During the three days of this event, 34 of the 43 active students of the three research lines of the IH2O Programme ─Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering; Climate, Climate Change and Coastal Infrastructures, and Hydrobiology and Environmental Management─ presented the progress of their doctoral research and their training process to the academic committees, faculty and research staff of the UC, IEO-CSIC and IHCantabria.
In these academic evaluation sessions, open to the public in hybrid format, each student of the IH2O Programme had about 10 minutes to present their work and, subsequently, attend a phase of questions and comments from their respective evaluation committee. This dynamic not only made it possible to evaluate the students’ formative progress, but also to enrich their projects through the exchange with specialists from within and outside the programme.
As guest speakers, in this edition of the IH2O Programme Conference participated: Raquel Somavilla, senior scientist at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (CSIC-IEO); Daniel Depellegrin, Ramón y Cajal researcher attached to IHCantabria, and José A. Juanes, Director of Strategies at IHCantabria, who presented the results of the first decade of this PhD programme (2014-2024).
Recognition of student work
The XI Conference of the IH2O Doctoral Programme was inaugurated on Monday, June 30, with the intervention of Araceli Puente, as the new coordinator of the IH2O Programme, and José A. Juanes, Director of Strategies of IHCantabria.
The closing ceremony of this event ─celebrated late yesterday morning, in the Auditorium of IHCantabria─, was chaired by Daniel Alvear, Director of Transfer of the UC. As is tradition at this academic meeting, prizes were awarded to the best presentations in each of the programme’s research lines, in recognition of the excellence and commitment of the student body to their scientific work. In this edition, the award winners were: Mariana Roldán Upegui (L1. Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering); Dina Vanessa Gómez Rave (L2. Climate, Climate Change and Infrastructures); and Raquel Zarauza Martínez(L3. Hydrobiology and Environmental Management). In addition, a prize was awarded for the best presentation by first-year doctoral students, which was given to Juan José Ortiz García, from the Line of Hydrobiology and Environmental Management (L3).
With this eleventh edition, the IH2O Doctoral Programme Conference reaffirms its role as a reference space for the training development of research personnel in the areas related to the three lines of research of the programme.
