The Spanish College of Road, Canal and Port Engineers awarded a Medal of Honor to Iñigo Losada

This distinction was received by Iñigo Losada in recognition of his outstanding career and professional merits in the field of coastal engineering and maritime sustainability.

 

The Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos (CICCP, by its acronym in Spanish), held on Monday, June 10, the traditional award ceremony of the Distinciones Colegiales 2024. At this event, Iñigo Losada, Research Director of the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the University of Cantabria (IHCantabria) and Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Cantabria, received a Medal of Honor.

The CICCP Medals of Honor and Medals for Professional Merit are awarded annually to civil engineers who have developed a relevant professional career, performing actions of unquestionable merit, and for having rendered outstanding services to the group.

The award ceremony took place yesterday at the Agustín de Betancourt Auditorium of the CICCP in Madrid. The event was attended by more than 300 people, including award winners and their families, colleagues, some representatives of the Public Administration and other members of the College. Representing IHCantabria, Iñigo Losada was accompanied at this event by the managing director, Raul Medina.

CICCP is the Spanish College of Road, Canal and Port Engineers and regulates the profession of civil engineering in Spain. This year, its Collegiate Distinctions Working Group recognized the professional work of a total of 24 members, awarding 6 Medals of Honor and 18 Medals of Professional Merit. All these distinctions were awarded by Miguel Angel Carrillo, president of the College; Ricardo Martin de Bustamante, vice-president of the College; and the members of the Board of Governors: Carmen de Andres, Federico Bonet, Juan Manuel Medina, Alejandro Castillo, Fernando Ruiz and Jose de Oña.

This year, 4 former deans were also recognized for their work at the head of the Demarcation, for their dedication and effort to disseminate and defend the work of civil engineering, as well as to offer the best services to the members.

The CICCP Medals of Honor and Professional Merit Award Ceremony was attended by more than 300 people in person, and many more participated online. This year, 6 professionals received Medals of Honor and 18 were awarded the CICCP Medals of Professional Merit. Prior to the ceremony, CICCP recorded the testimonies of the people who received these awards.

During the inauguration of this event, the president of the CICCP, Miguel Angel Carrillo Suarez, highlighted the importance of “having civil engineers with the highest technical and resolution capacity”. In this sense, he congratulated the members distinguished with the medals and defended “the value of science, technology and its applications”.

Career of Iñigo Losada

Íñigo Losada is a national and international reference in the field of coastal engineering and maritime sustainability. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Cantabria and the University of Delaware (USA), where he worked in coastal oceanography, mainly in the understanding and modeling of coastal dynamics and its interaction with natural and artificial structures.

He was founding director of IHCantabria, between 2007 and 2011, where he is also scientific director of the Cantabria Coastal and Ocean Basin (CCOB), a scientific-technical facility of international reference.

As principal investigator, he has led more than 80 technology transfer projects and has contributed to the development of crucial methods and tools for coastal protection worldwide. With more than 200 publications and more than 130 articles in high impact journals such as Nature Climate Change and Nature Communications, Iñigo Losada is also editor-in-chief of Coastal Engineering and member of the Editorial Board of other scientific journals.

In 2023, the Ministry of Science and Innovation awarded Iñigo Losada the Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Research Awardin recognition of his international leadership in ocean engineering and his pioneering contributions to the development of tools that are laying the foundation for sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources.
