Since 2015, 155 students from more than 20 countries have completed this international reference program, which this Saturday celebrated its tenth award ceremony at IHCantabria

The Universidad de Cantabria (UC) held this Saturday the tenth ceremony for the awarding of the Master in Coasts and Ports (CyP), a postgraduate program that since 2015 has graduated 155 students from more than 20 countries and has established itself as an academic and scientific reference in coastal and port engineering.

The ceremony took place in the auditorium of the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria), a research center where many graduates of this master’s program are currently working as experts, participating in projects or as researchers in the Doctoral Program in “Coastal Engineering, Hydrobiology and Management of Aquatic Systems (IH2O)” of the Universidad de Cantabria (UC).

Therefore, the training offered by the Master’s program in C&P contributes to the advancement of knowledge and the development of solutions to the major challenges facing coastal and port areas, both in Spain and abroad.

A decade of specialized training

The event was attended by the UC Professor and general director of IHCantabria, Raúl Medina, who gave the welcoming speech. The UC Professor and IHCantabria Research Director, Íñigo Losada Rodríguez, gave the closing lecture under the title “Adaptation and resilience to climate change of the coast. The greatest challenge of coastal engineering”. In his speech, Mr. Losada stressed the importance of the Master in C&P in the training of technical and scientific personnel, for which he congratulated those who have taken on this challenge.

Also intervening were Mauricio González Rodríguez ─coordinator of the Official Master in Coasts and Ports, UC Professor and head of the Coastal Engineering and Management Group of IHCantabria─, Alfonso Vierna Grosso, representative of the group of students; Javier López Lara, director of the Department of Water and Environmental Sciences and Techniques of the UC; Jorge Rodríguez Hernández, Head of Studies of the ETSI de Caminos, Canales y Puertos of the UC, and Ángel Cobo Ortega, vice-rector of Academic Planning of the UC.

In his speech, Mauricio González congratulated the 10th graduating class for completing a demanding program and recognized the role that this master’s program has played in the international projection of the UC. He highlighted the great contribution to society made by the graduates in these 10 editions of the Master in S&P; both in the public and private spheres, in the academic and scientific world.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of the awards to the 10th graduating class of the Master’s Degree in C&P, which consisted of Cristina Olmo Ballesteros, Daykelín León Arias, Emma Marie Gabrielle Sartore, Alfonso Vierna Grosso, Guillermo Carballo Lafuente, Marco Esteban Saravia Contreras, Nuria Mor Roig, Rocío Denise Laurente and Roseline-Daría Obieze Giró. Another key moment was the awarding of the prize for the best transcript of this graduating class, which went to the student Rocío Laurente.

A graduate program that prepares for global challenges

The Master in Coasts and Ports (C&P) trains professionals in the analysis of coastal processes and in the design, development and management of coastal, port and offshore infrastructures. Its contents include the management of risks such as erosion, flooding, oil spills, impacts and adaptation to climate change, as well as the threat of tsunamis. This program has evolved over the years, its predecessor being the Official Master’s Degree in Coastal and Port Engineering, of which nine editions were taught from 2006 to 2015, with a total of 201 graduates.

The program is aimed at graduates in Civil Engineering, Marine Sciences and related disciplines. Its academic orientation allows students to continue towards the PhD in Coastal Engineering, Hydrobiology and Management of Aquatic Systems (IH2O) of the Universidad de Cantabria.

From the ten editions of the Master’s program in Coasts and Ports (C&P), which has been taught since 2015, 155 professionals have graduated, of whom more than 35% are international students, mainly from Latin America. This global profile has contributed to consolidate its recognition as a reference postgraduate program in the scientific and professional community dedicated to coastal engineering and environmental sciences, among other disciplines.

The Universidad de Cantabria and IHCantabria congratulate the graduates of the 10th edition of the Master in Coasts and Ports and wish them success in their professional and research careers, convinced that their work will be key to advancing the sustainability and resilience of coastal and port environments on an international scale.
