IHCantabria will collaborate with the MICROFAM project, led by the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, UIB-CSIC).
Two researchers from the Coastal Ecosystems group of IHCantabria, Inés Mazarrasa, will collaborate with the MICROFAM project, financed by the BBVA Foundation and led by the researcher Fiona Tomas Nash, from the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, UIB-CSIC).
MICROFAM seeks to evaluate the role of seagrasses in the dynamics and accumulation of microplastics, considering the interaction with hydrodynamics and the state of conservation of these.
The research team is composed of four more researchers, from different centers of: Rocío Jiménez Ramos (IMEDEA); Luis Gonzalo Egea Tinoco (University of Cadiz); Fernando Guillermo Brun Murillo (University of Cadiz) and Eduardo Infantes Oanes (University of Gothenburg).
IH Cantabria will contribute to two main tasks of the project: the evaluation of the dynamics of microplastic particles in seagrass communities in the Santander Bay, one of the study areas of the project, and the dissemination and transfer of knowledge about the value of seagrasses on the Spanish coast and their vulnerability to plastic pollution, under a dissemination approach.
