IHCantabria participates in the initiative to promote the sustainable management of Alcúdia Bay
Professional Conference “Alcúdia Bay, Full Speed Ahead” in Mallorca
The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria contributes with its scientific and technical expertise to the initiative launched by government agencies, the scientific community, and the business sector to address the environmental, territorial, and socioeconomic challenges facing Alcúdia Bay in Mallorca
The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) participated in the professional conference “Alcúdia Bay, At All Costs”, an event that brought together more than 120 representatives from the scientific community, government agencies, and the business sector with the goal of promoting coordinated and sustainable land-use planning for Alcúdia Bay in Mallorca.
The meeting is taking place within the framework of the General Action Protocol for the stabilization and recovery of the coastal zone of Alcúdia Bay, an initiative that seeks to generate the knowledge necessary to understand the evolution of this coastal system, identify the main challenges affecting it, and define a medium- and long-term strategy.
During the conference, researchers and institutional representatives emphasized the need to address the bay’s land-use management from a comprehensive perspective, encompassing coastal dynamics, flooding, stormwater, sanitation, wetlands, port infrastructure, urban planning, and economic and tourism activities.
In this initiative, IHCantabria contributes with its scientific and technical expertise in the analysis of coastal dynamics, adaptation to climate change, and integrated water management. Its contribution will help generate the knowledge needed to evaluate alternative courses of action and support informed decision-making based on scientific criteria.
Among the challenges identified are the loss of sand from beaches, sediment buildup in the harbor, coastal erosion, and the risk of flooding. To address these challenges, the protocol proposes the creation of a technical working group that will analyze the causes of the identified problems, study possible solutions, and design the necessary action plan. The project draws on the experience gained through the Life Adapt Cala Millor initiative, which is already underway in another coastal area of Mallorca.
Through its participation in this project, IHCantabria reinforces its commitment to generating applied knowledge for the sustainable management of coastal systems and to developing integrated solutions that help increase the resilience of regions in the face of environmental challenges.
