Collaboration that will promote the improvement of port security and operability

This strategic collaboration establishes a framework for joint work in coastal resilience, environmental sustainability, digitization and scientific knowledge transfer to the marina and marina sector.
The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) has formalized a General Protocol of Action with the Spanish Federation of Associations of Marinas and Tourist Ports(Marinas of Spain) aimed at establishing a stable framework of collaboration in matters of common interest for the sector of marinas and marinas.

Both entities share an interest in promoting the environmental sustainability of marinas, coastal resilience in the face of waves and rising sea levels, innovation and digitalization of port management, the transfer of scientific knowledge to the sector and the promotion of sea tourism from a sustainable perspective. The specific actions arising from this agreement will be articulated through specific agreements or contracts.

The working day, held at the headquarters of IHCantabria, was attended by its managers: Raúl Medina (General Manager), Francisco Royano (Transfer Director) and José Antonio Juanes (Strategy Director). On behalf of the Asociación Marinas de España, the event was led by its president, Tomás Azcárate, together with the general secretary, Pablo Peiro, and the manager of Marina de Pedreña, Jesús Antonio Barros.

This strategic collaboration, with an expected duration of four years, will drive innovation, digitization and improvement of port safety and operability. IHCantabria will provide scientific solutions for coastal resilience, integrating key capabilities such as the integrated design of marinas, the development of early warning systems, adaptation to climate change, optimization of fleets and spaces and the operation of video surveillance systems to support management.

Tomás Azcárate stressed that “marinas need to rely on the best scientific knowledge available to meet the challenges ahead, from adapting to climate change to improving the environmental sustainability of our facilities. Having an ally of the international prestige of IHCantabria is an extraordinary opportunity for the entire sector”.

For his part, Raúl Medina pointed out that “this protocol allows us to bring our research capacity closer to a sector that knows first-hand the real needs of the coast. Marinas are coastal infrastructures that require advanced technical solutions, and at the same time they are spaces where science can contribute directly to a more efficient and respectful management of the marine environment”.

IHCantabria, as a reference research center in the study and management of climate risk, will contribute with its experience and scientific knowledge in marine climatology, hydrodynamics and ocean-meteorological modeling, promoting coastal resilience and an efficient management of climate risks associated with waves, storms or sea level rise.

Marinas de España, will take advantage of its extensive network, which already has more than 150 associated marinas, disseminating the initiatives and results derived from this collaboration and facilitating contact and dialogue with the main representatives of this sector. This protocol reinforces its strategy of establishing alliances with knowledge centers that contribute to the modernization and competitiveness of the Spanish marina and tourism sector, in a context marked by the challenges of climate change, ecological transition and the need to incorporate innovation into the daily management of nautical facilities.
