If you want to learn to better characterize the impacts of natural hazards and of climate change, in order to reduce their impacts through social, economic and technical measures, come to the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of Universidad de Cantabria to obtain your PhD working in the Saturnalia project.

The Saturnalia project aims to develop a deeper knowledge on the statistical laws that best describe the occurrence of several natural phenomena with potential to induce catastrophic consequences, such as floods, droughts and hurricanes. This knowledge will allow other colleagues at the Institute to deepen their understanding of the mechanisms driving the impacts and, among all of us, we will be able to propose solutions for a more resilient society.

During your PhD, you will develop new methodologies, based on advanced statistical techniques, to characterize with better accuracy the climate and environmental variables that control the occurrence of catastrophic events and their impacts on the society and the economy. You will also learn how to incorporate into these characterizations the effects of climate change. All this effort will be aimed at understanding the connections among processes that induce the impacts to propose useful solutions for society from the most advanced scientific knowledge.

You will work in the Marine Climate and Climate Change group, led by Professor Iñigo Losada, IPCC member, hand in hand with other colleagues whose activity is aimed at developing new knowledge on other aspects of the risk chain.

If you believe that it is possible to transform our world into a better one through scientific knowledge, IHCantabria is your place, apply to join our team, we are waiting for you!
