XABIER GUINDA SALSAMENDI
Biografía
Xabier Guinda es Licenciado en Ciencias del Mar por la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y Doctor por la Universidad de Cantabria. Su tesis doctoral, defendida en 2008 y galardonada con el Premio de Investigación de Medio Ambiente del Gobierno de Cantabria en 2009, se basó en el desarrollo de procedimientos para la evaluación del estado ecológico de las masas de agua costeras, especialmente orientados a la aplicación de la Directiva Marco del Agua (2000/60/CE).
Sus principales líneas de investigación se centran en el estudio de los ecosistemas litorales intermareales y submareales, las relaciones entre las comunidades biológicas marinas y su entorno, el monitoreo y cartografiado de poblaciones, la vigilancia ambiental, el desarrollo y aplicación de indicadores e índices de calidad, la evaluación de recursos biológicos marinos, los estudios de impacto ambiental, la viabilidad y el impacto de las energías renovables marinas, la prevención y evaluación de la contaminación y la gestión de zonas costeras en general.
Especializado en macroalgas y fitoplancton, ha participado activamente en el ejercicio de intercalibración de métricas para la implementación de la Directiva Marco del Agua (DMA), liderando, como IHCantabria, el grupo correspondiente a las macroalgas en la región geográfica del Nordeste Atlántico.
Gracias al programa de movilidad “José Castillejo” del Ministerio de Educación, en 2010 realizó una estancia postdoctoral en el Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping de la Universidad de New Hampshire (EEUU), donde aplicó técnicas de construcción y análisis de videomosaicos para el estudio de los hábitats submareales.
Ha participado en varias campañas oceanográficas relacionadas con las pesquerías comerciales y con el cartografiado y caracterización de comunidades biológicas de aguas profundas. Asimismo, es buceador profesional y experto en el manejo de Vehículos Operados por control Remoto (ROV), siendo responsable del ROV de IHCantabria.
