Biography

Xabier Guinda graduated in marine sciences by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and received his Ph.D. from the Universidad de Cantabria in 2008. His doctoral thesis, awarded in 2009 with the Government of Cantabria Environmental Research Prize, was based on the development of procedures for the assessment of ecological status in coastal water bodies, specially oriented to the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC).
His main research areas are based in the study of intertidal and subtidal marine ecosystems, the relationships between the marine biological communities and their environment, the monitoring and cartography of populations, environmental surveillance, the development and application of quality indices and indicators, the assessment of marine biological resources, environmental impact assessment studies, the viability and environmental impact of marine renewable energy devices, the prevention and assessment of the pollution and the management of coastal areas in general.
Specialized in macroalgae and phytoplankton, he has participated actively in the intercalibration exercise of metrics for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), leading, as IHCantabria, the group of macroalgae in the Northeast Atlantic region.
Thanks to the mobility program “José Castillejo” of the Spanish Ministry of Education, in 2010 he had a postdoctoral fellowship to work at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping of the University of New Hampshire (USA), where he applied videomosaic construction and analysing techniques for the study of subtidal habitats.
He has participated in various oceanographic cruises related to commercial fisheries and the cartography and characterization of deep-sea biological communities. Xabier is a professional diver and an expert user of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), being in charge of the ROV of IHCantabria.
