Presentation of the EDUC management at IHCantabria on the news of the doctorate, and the activity of the School.

The visit of the directors of the EDUC was part of a series of meetings with the different centers of the Universidad de Cantabria.

The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the University of Cantabria (IHCantabria) received today in its facilities the visit of the Doctoral School of the University of Cantabria (EDUC), in an informative day focused on offering the best possible service to doctoral students and their supervisors.

The EDUC management visits the centers linked to doctoral training to present to supervisors and doctoral students the news of the doctoral program and the activity of the School.

During the presentation held in the auditorium of IHCantabria, they described the characteristics of current doctoral training, its structure, internationalization and transfer, as well as the role of the Academic Committees of the Doctoral Programs, responsible for defining, coordinating and guaranteeing the quality of the academic programs. They also addressed relevant issues such as transversal training, which is essential to be prepared and be able to develop a professional career in any field. The EDUC offers 53 transversal training courses, with the participation of the entire university on a wide variety of topics, such as creativity, legality, transfer or dissemination.

The session ended with a debate in which the participants had the opportunity to make comments, criticisms and suggestions to help improve the day-to-day running of the EDUC. At the moment, the UC is the only institution capable of offering this degree in Cantabria, so it is essential to maintain and strengthen the current quality standards.

IHCantabria represents a focus for attracting talent, not only locally but also beyond our borders, thanks to its positioning as a national and international reference center in the study and management of socio-ecological systems related to water. The commitment to the training of research personnel represents one of the main strengths of IHCantabria.

The IH2O doctoral program, whose academic management is carried out by IHCantabria, has 44 active doctoral students from 13 countries and 3 continents. This group represents approximately 6% of the research personnel in training at the University of Cantabria and 21% of the doctoral students in the Engineering programs.

The core of IHCantabria’s training activities lies in training its staff, addressing key issues related, among others, to hydraulic infrastructures, water resources, aquatic ecosystems, climate and climate change risks. In the last decade, 39 doctoral theses have been defended, and during this academic year 2026, six new theses are expected to be defended within the IH2O program.
