The group of RAI representatives, who will be in Santander on January 20 and 21, will participate in academic, cultural and institutional activities that will take place at the Santander City Hall, the University of Cantabria, the Palacio de la Magdalena, IES Santa Clara and IHCantabria.

The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) is preparing to receive in Santander a delegation of academics from the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAI), on January 20 and 21.

The visit will be led by the president of the RAI, Jaime Domínguez Abascal, and has been organized by the professors of the University of Cantabria and full members of the RAI, Enrique Castillo Ron and Iñigo Losada, director of Research at IHCantabria.

Among the activities scheduled within the framework of this visit, a session In Memoriam of Miguel Ángel Losada Rodríguez is scheduled for Tuesday, January 21, starting at 12:30 p.m., in the Auditorium of IHCantabria.

Other activities in which RAI representatives will be participating

On January 20 and 21, Santander will be the epicenter of several activities that will include the presence of a RAI delegation in various scenarios. Early on Monday, January 20, RAI representatives will begin the day with a meeting of its Board of Governors. Afterwards, they will attend an official reception at the Santander City Hall, where they will be welcomed by the Mayoress of Santander, Gema Igual.

At 12:30 p.m. on the same day, three different activities in which RAI representatives will participate are scheduled. One of these activities is the keynote lecture to be given by Antonio Huerta, RAI academic and director of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), an entity of great relevance in the field of research in Catalonia, which combines the governmental support it receives with independence of action. His lecture is entitled “ICREA: 20 years of attracting, recovering and retaining talent” and will be held in the Aula Magna of the School of Civil Engineering of the Universidad de Cantabria (UC).

Simultaneously, the UC will host a meeting led by the Manager of the RAI, Javier Pérez de Vargas, with the participation of representatives of Cantabrian associations and this university, to discuss the RAI’s “Women and Engineering” programme.

The third activity is scheduled for Monday, January 20, at 12:30 p.m., a visit to the Santa Clara Secondary School (IES), where some RAI academics will meet with the Minister of Education of the Government of Cantabria, Sergio Silva. The students of this institute will also be able to enjoy a series of lectures, which will be given by prominent RAI academics, such as Javier Ventura-Traveset, Íñigo Losada and Marita Vallet.

On Monday afternoon, the RAI academicians will participate in a meeting at the Palacio de la Magdalena, followed by a guided tour of this emblematic historic building.

Tribute to Miguel A. Losada at IHCantabria

On Tuesday, January 21, starting at 10:30, IHCantabria will receive the visit of the RAI delegation at its facilities. At 12:30, an In Memoriam session will be held in the Auditorium, in honor of Miguel Angel Losada Rodríguez (1947-2024), a key figure in maritime and port engineering and one of the promoters of the creation of IHCantabria. This event will be chaired by Jaime Domínguez Abascal, president of the RAI, and will include the participation of María José Polo Gómez, vice-rector of Science Policy of the University of Córdoba; Raúl Medina Santamaría, general director of IHCantabria, and Enrique Castillo Ron, academician of the RAI.

The visit of a RAI delegation to Cantabria reinforces the position of this region and IHCantabria as a reference in the field of research, technology transfer and engineering-related training.
