Next Tuesday, January 21, the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) will host a session In Memoriam to Professor Miguel Ángel Losada Rodríguez, professor of the Universidad de Cantabria (UC). The invitation to this posthumous tribute was issued by the President of the Royal Academy of Engineeringb(RAI), Jaime Domínguez Abascal, who will travel to Santander with a delegation of RAI academicians who will participate in several academic, cultural and institutional activities on January 20 and 21.

In the In Memoriam session to Miguel A. Losada, who passed away on February 26, 2024 in Santander, a recognition will be offered to the life, career and legacy of this professor, who is considered a key figure in maritime and port engineering. He won the National Civil Engineering Award in 2018, he stood out for his involvement in the construction of what is today the University of Cantabria and in the founding of IHCantabria. It is precisely in the Auditorium of this institute where an In Memoriam session will be held in his honor at 12:30 next Tuesday, an event that will include the intervention of the president of the RAI, Jaime Domínguez Abascal; the rector of the UC, Ángel Pazos; the general director of IHCantabria, Raúl Medina; the vice rector of Science Policy of the University of Cordoba, María José Polo, and Enrique Castillo, academician of the RAI.

ICREA Conference

One of the activities scheduled in Santander for the visit of a delegation of academics from the RAI is the presentation of a keynote lecture by the director of the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), Antonio Huerta, who will share his vision and experience at the head of this institution, in a conference entitled “ICREA: 20 years of attraction, recovery and retention of talent”. This master conference will take place on Monday, January 20, in the Aula Magna of the ETSI de Caminos, Canales y Puertos of the University of Cantabria, starting at 12:30 pm; it will be open to the public.

ICREA was created in 2001, with the aim of attracting and retaining high-level research talent. This institution works in close collaboration with Catalan universities and research centers, integrating its researchers into the region’s academic and scientific system. This institution has transformed the research landscape in Catalonia by combining government support with independence of action. According to Antonio Huerta, ICREA has fostered an environment of academic and scientific excellence by attracting researchers of high international standing who carry out their work without teaching or administrative obligations, allowing them to devote themselves fully to advanced research.

RAI visit to Cantabria

The visit of a delegation of RAI academics to Cantabria has been organized by Enrique Castillo Ron and Iñigo Losada, Research Director of IHCantabria, both professors at the Universidad de Cantabria and full members of the RAI.

On January 21 and 22, Santander will be the epicenter of several academic, cultural and institutional activities with the participation of RAI academics, which will be held at the Santander City Hall, the University of Cantabria, the Palacio de la Magdalena, the IES Santa Clara and IHCantabria.
