Biography

Monica has a degree in Marine Sciences from the Catholic University of Valencia (2022) and completed the International Master in Marine and Coastal Systems at the University of Algarve, Portugal (2025). During her training she developed both her Bachelor and Master Thesis in the field of estuarine benthic ecology, investigating the spatial patterns of biological traits of benthic communities and their response to different environmental gradients.

Currently, she is a predoctoral researcher in the Coastal Ecosystems group, where she is developing a doctoral thesis focused on benthic biodiversity and the functioning of estuarine ecosystems. Her research integrates taxonomic, functional and intraspecific diversity to understand how these components of biodiversity fluctuate in the face of environmental heterogeneity and how they contribute to ecosystem functioning.
