Biography

Dr. Cabanillas is a quantitative ecologist and environmental consultant with expertise in mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, and coastal ecosystem research. After completing a PhD in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, where she developed individual-based models of Scottish kelp population dynamics using dynamic energy budget theory, she joined IHCantabria as a consultant, where she continues to work at the intersection of ecology, data science, and environmental policy.

Her work spans a broad range of projects, including European-scale climate change databases, seagrass carbon stock estimation using machine learning, Water Framework Directive reporting, and the design of socio-ecological vulnerability indices as part of the EU Horizon Europe Digital Ocean Twin project. A fluent English and Spanish speaker, she brings both technical depth — with strong skills in R, Python, and spatial analysis — and a collaborative approach to international, multidisciplinary research teams, and has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications alongside delivering training and outreach within her institution.
