Offshore Structures

One of IHCantabria’s main lines of action is the numerical and experimental analysis of dynamic behaviour for the design of offshore structures for various applications.

The activity we develop at IHCantabria in this field is based on the deep knowledge of the study of the interaction flow-structure, applied to approach the different technical challenges.

Areas of Expertise

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY OF FIXED OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

We carry out studies of loads on gravity structures(Gravity Based Foundations, GBF), Jacket, monopile, etc.
We analyse the adaptation of the structures for different meteoceanic scenarios.

ANALYSIS OF SCOUR IN OFFSHORE STRUCTURES UNDER THE ACTION OF WAVES AND CURRENTS

We carry out experimental studies of the scour produced around monopile, jacket and GBF structures as a result of waves and currents.
We carry out numerical studies of the potential scouring in offshore structures due to the effect of waves and currents.
We study of the effectiveness of innovative anti-scouring protection systems.

EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF FLOATING STRUCTURES OF VARIOUS TYPES
We analyse the behavior of floating structures: SPAR, semi-submersible.
We optimize the design of floating structures for different offshore uses, such as energy production, aquaculture or multi-use platforms (MUP).
We analyse the adaptation of floating structures for different meteo-oceanic scenarios.
EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF ANCHORING SYSTEMS AND OTHER MOORING SYSTEMS

We optimize anchoring systems for different uses.
We study the behaviour of anchoring systems such as: number of lines, geometric arrangement, dimensions, materials, rigidity.
We analyse the potential cost reduction associated with the design of the mooring system.

SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS

SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS

NAUTILUS

DRAGADOS

One of the most relevant challenges for floating offshore wind is the development of platforms with low operating costs that can be outfitted and/or maintained in conventional ports. This entails the use of low-maintenance materials such as concrete, which has a proven durability in marine environments

COBRA-KINKARDINE

SPJ-IBERDROLA

Small-scale tests to evaluate the behaviour of different anti-scour solutions for the protection of Jacket-type structures in the new East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm that Iberdrola is building in the United Kingdom.
