MARINE WIND ENERGY

The major challenge of the current marine wind farm is to achieve technological solutions that allow the competitive development of wind farms offshore to different depths and in particular in sites with depths above 40-50 meters.

In this route, the development of floating solutions takes center stage, aimed at designing platforms that will enable the efficient production of wind energy at great depths from the techno-economic point of view.

At IHCantabria we have extensive experience in the development and support of the development of innovative wind platforms.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF INNOVATIVE PLATFORMS FOR OFFSHORE WIND POWER

We carry out integrate studies of the system formed by the platform, anchoring system and wind turbine, as well as the non-linear interaction between the different elements.
We optimize anchoring systems adapted to the characteristics of each platform, the meteoceanic scenario and other conditions such as the bathymetry and seabed materials.
We analyse the effect of the turbine control system on the behavior of the platforms at sea.
We optimize the hull design to improve its behavior at sea, improve accessibility and reduce the LCOE.

EXPERIMENTAL MODELING IN WAVE TANK OF OFFSHORE WIND POWER PLATFORMS

We develop scale models engineering.
We scale and adapt anchoring systems for analysis in the wave tank.
We develop advanced techniques to simulate the aerodynamics of a small-scale wind turbine, including the influence of the control system on the floating platform.
We develop specific monitoring and sensor systems to track tests of highly innovative structures.

Associations and Consortia

Associations and Consortia

IHCantabria expands its abilities in the field of offshore wind thanks to the TRL+ consortium, formed by IHCantabria and the offshore test area BiMEP. The goal of this consortium is to accompany marine power developers as they take an idea from the concept stage to market, gradually going through the different TRLs.

To do this, it offers the sector experimental facilities ranging from channels and tanks for scale testing to a cutting edge testing area.

The consortium develops activities such as:

  • Experimental modeling of innovative offshore wind devices.
  • Numerical modeling of innovative devices for offshore wind.
  • Development of a virtual test park or virtual twin test park.
  • Historical analysis of meteoceanic conditions through instrumentally calibrated and validated numerical models.

  • Prediction of meteoceanic conditions through instrumentally calibrated and validated models.
  • Development of a test park management expert systems and decision-making system.
  • Design and optimization of marine operations (installation and dismantling, operation and maintenance).

SIGNIFICANT Projects

SIGNIFICANT Projects

DemoSATH

In response to the clear demand from the offshore wind market for economically viable solutions for commercial installations in medium and high depths (from 40 meters), SAITEC OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGIES, between 2013 and 2015, developed the SATH (“Swinging Around Twin Hull”) floating structure concept.

MENHIR

One of the most relevant challenges for floating offshore wind is the development of platforms with low operating costs that can be outfitted and/or maintained in conventional ports. This entails the use of low-maintenance materials such as concrete, which has a proven durability in marine environments.
