Solutions for growing marine species in coastal and oceanic waters

World Bank forecasts indicate that in the next 20 years, there will be a significant increase in the demand for fisheries products. However, the gap between consumption and the volume of fish catches continues to increase; as a result, fishing will not be able to satisfy on its own the growing global demand for seafood. In the short term, an important part of this demand will be supplied by aquaculture, which is already working to develop sustainable technologies.

The success of the TEN-SHORES project, conducted in collaboration with private companies, demonstrates the ability of IHCantabria to develop tools to assess how suitable specific areas are to this activity, and to design a cage that can house a large volume of fish and withstand the most adverse effects in said area of operation, making it a competitive solution compared to other types of aquaculture cages on the market.

The institute’s participation in the TEN-SHORES project has resulted in methods to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
