Biography

María Fuentes Álvarez de Eulate is a researcher at IHCantabria and currently belongs to the Climate Risks, Adaptation and Resilience Group. María is a Civil Engineer (University of Cantabria, 2012) and Master in Coastal and Port Engineering (University of Cantabria, 2014). Since July 2014 she is part of the Institute. During her initial stage at the institute, María developed her activity in the field of maritime and port engineering, focusing on functional and structural analysis of port infrastructures. María has participated in more than 30 national and international projects related to the design of ports and coastal protection structures, including the development of early warning systems for port operations and generating tools for the analysis of wave-structure interaction. Additionally, he has been responsible for the design and execution of several small-scale physical model tests, and has regularly participated in training courses for national and international companies in the sector in the use of tools for the evaluation of the impacts of coastal dynamics on infrastructures.

In recent years, Maria has specialized in the analysis and assessment of risk in coastal areas due to the effects of climate change, and especially in their infrastructures and urban areas. She has participated in research projects with entities such as IFC, AECID or the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge for the development of methodologies to characterize risk and design solutions to adapt the coast through the methodological framework proposed by the IPCC. In addition, she is co-author of several scientific articles associated with coastal impacts and has been a speaker at various national and international conferences in the field.
