Biography
PhD of Civil Engineering, Associated Professor of the Universidad de Cantabria and responsible for the group of hydraulic engineering of the IHCantabria.
The main research topics of Dr. Alvarez are: Hydrology, Fluid Mechanics, Water quality modelling, Waste Water Management and Submarine outfall environmental design.
He has participated as a researcher in more than 150 national and international projects funded by public and private institutions and companies.
He has authored over 70 papers on hydrology, drainage, mathematical modelling of water quality, etc., that have been published in various national and international journals (20) and conference proceedings. It is also co-author of a book on environmental design of sewer systems in coastal areas and several book chapters on outfalls design, some of which have been published by prestigious international publishers.
He has been member of the Advisory Group of the Spanish Port Authority in the development of the “Recommendations Maritime Works 5.1: Quality of Coastal Waters in Port Areas” (2005); the Advisory Group of the Spanish Research Centre “CEDEX” to develop the “Technical Guide for sewer systems and urban drainage” (2007) and the “Committee on Marine Outfall Systems (Fluid Mechanics Section)” of the International Water Association. (2009-2012). He was also member of the scientific committee of the “International Symposium on outfall Systems”, that took place in Mar del Plata (Argentina) in 2011, among others.
In 2002 Dr. Alvarez received the National Environment Award “AQUA” (2002), the most prestigious given by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment.
