Natural Spaces and Conservation of Ecosystems

The assessment and management of natural ecosystems has become an essential element in achieving the objective of sustainable development of the coastal environment.

At IHCantabria we have experience in the development of different methodological procedures for the assessment of the conservation status of natural habitats and their species, both locally and regionally and/or globally. In all cases, we start from the analysis of the biological-anthropic interactions in order to define conservation and restoration measures that guarantee the maintenance of the fundamental ecological processes for the maintenance of the structure and function of ecosystems.

The methods developed by IHCantabria include protocols for the inventory and mapping of habitats, as well as methodological proposals for the definition of active and passive management measures and public participation.

The experience and knowledge we have acquired at IHCantabria on the assessment and management of natural ecosystems has allowed it to participate in the design and drafting of Management Plans for the Conservation of Protected Natural Spaces, Plans for Integrated Basin Management and Plans for Integrated Coastal Zone Management.

METHODOLOGY

We assess the conservation status of Natura 2000 sites and their components (habitats and species).

We develop management plans for spaces, species and habitats cataloged by the Habitats Directive (92/43/CEE).

We carry out mapping of habitats using traditional techniques and through remote sensing.

We assess the impacts on the spaces of the Natura 2000 Network.

We develop public participation processes.
