Environmental Impact Assessments
Environmental impact assessment has become a universal tool for environmental management and as a support for decision making at multiple scales.
At IHCantabria we apply various international approaches to the analysis of environmental risks and impacts, developing its own methodologies at different scales and levels: (i) Environmental risk assessment of aquatic ecosystems (protected areas, marinas, commercial ports, shellfish resource production areas.) for the definition of management and conservation measures on a regional scale, (ii) Environmental risk assessment of pollutants for the definition of management strategies at the local level (bathing water, port, estuary.), (iii) Space-time risk assessment of specific activities (dredging, hydrocarbon management, installation of marine renewable energies) for the design of contingency plans and environmental monitoring programs.
The methodologies we develop at IHCantabria, based on numerical modelling and software also developed by us, arise in a multidisciplinary environment that integrates scientists, managers, lawyers and risk assessment specialists.
METHOLOGY
We evaluate the environmenta impact and risk of aquatic ecosystems (e.g. protected areas, biological resources extraction zones, marinas, commercial ports).
We analyse and model flow series and management of altered hydrologic regimes.
We assess the environmental risk and impact of specific activities (e.g. urban and industrial discharges, dredging, channeling, marine renewable energy infrastructures) at different spatio-temporal scales.
We draft of environmental impact studies and strategic environmental studies.
We develop mathematical models of water quality.
Proposal for management and conservation measures at the regional level.
We carry out studies of the impact on the Natura 2000 network.
We develop decision support systems (DSS)
