biological resources and aquaculture

Marine biological resources are an important source of wealth and social and cultural roots on the coast that require adequate knowledge for their management.

The basic knowledgewe have acquired at IHCantabria on the structure and functioning of these coastal ecosystems has allowed their application in the evaluation of coastal resources of economic interest (e.g. bivalves, sea urchins, barnacles, algae, fish), carrying out analyses of distribution, stocks, population trends and larval dispersion of these species both in current and future climate change scenarios.
Likewise, We have worked on the identification of areas for the expansion of marine aquaculture and the design of infrastructures for the cultivation of different fish, gastropod and bivalve species in coastal and oceanic waters.

The information we have generated at IHCantabria has been transmitted to the managers of the coastal environment in order to manage the maritime space and ensure an efficient and sustainable management of marine resources.

METHODOLOGY

We analyse and evaluate the distribution of stocks of coastal resources of economic interest (e.g. bivalves, sea urchins, barnacles, algae, fish).

We carry out studies of fluvial, estuarine and marine communities (e.g. rivers, lakes, marshes, sandy bottoms, cliffs, dunes).

We carry out monitoring of infaunal resources and algae fields of commercial interest.

We model and predict the evolution of aquatic species in different anthropic pressure and climate change scenarios.

We identify suitable areas for expanding marine aquaculture.

We design infrastructures and cages for cultivating fish species and molluscs in coastal and oceanic waters (offshore).

SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS

WILDLIFE RESOURCES

Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development. Government of Cantabria. In 2005, 2010 and 2015 an evaluation of the distribution and stock of the fauna resources of shellfish interest in the main estuaries of Cantabria has been carried out.

GELIDIUM

Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development. Government of Cantabria. In 2005, 2010 and 2015 an evaluation of the distribution and stock of the fauna resources of shellfish interest in the main estuaries of Cantabria has been carried out.

TEN-SHORES

2014 – 2017. Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The objective of the project is to develop a methodology that jointly considers the incorporation of new models of farming systems (cages) and the optimization of the integral design of ocean aquaculture parks, considering the current environmental conditions of the receiving environment and the contour conditions of the aquaculture market worldwide.

CULTIVO

2017 – 2018. Government of Cantabria (R&D&I, INNOVA 2016 Line. CULTIVATION aims to carry out an analysis of the potential of Cantabria’s maritime space for the cultivation of marine species of commercial interest (regional scale) and to create business models for the cultivation and commercialisation of bivalve mollusc species in different locations in the region (local scale).

ATLAS

2018 -2019. Biodiversity Foundation. The objective of ATLAS is to develop techniques and applications that will serve managers and the sectors involved as a basic decision-making tool in the implementation of Directive 2014/89/ EU and Decree 363/2017 on the maritime spatial planning of aquaculture farms in the Spanish Exclusionary Economic Zone.
