On May 6 and 7, the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad deCantabria (IHCantabria<\/a>) organized at its headquarters the annual meeting of the European project EMODnet Biology, which aims to improve access to high quality marine data for various users, such as researchers, public authorities and private entities. The meeting brought together 25 researchers from different European countries, who work on the collection, standardization and dissemination of marine biological data, in order to support decision making at European level. <\/p>\n

EMODnet Biology is a marine biodiversity thematic service of the European Marine Observation and Data Network EMODnet, whose mission is to provide free and open access to data and information on marine species, from angiosperms, benthos and fish, to seabirds, mammals, phytoplankton or macroalgae, mainly from European seas, but also incorporating data from other regions of the world.<\/p>\n

This annual working meeting marks the halfway point of the second part of Phase V of the project (2025-2027), with the aim of further advancing open access and interoperability of marine biodiversity data. The organization of the conference responds to the need to coordinate partners, share technical and scientific advances, evaluate results and define the next steps of the project. The ultimate goal is to improve the access and quality of marine biological data in Europe, supporting scientific research, sustainable management of the seas and the development of public policies based on sound knowledge. <\/p>\n

During the development of the second part of Phase V, the EMODnet Biology project will continue to deepen the creation of geospatial products, species distribution maps and analysis tools, such as the macroalgae invasion hotspots and coldspots in Europe, which is one of the tools created by IHCantabria.<\/p>\n

Representatives of scientific institutions and research centers from all over Europe participated in this meeting, including Belgium (VLIZ, ULi\u00e8ge, ILVO), Spain (IH Cantabria, IEO, ICATMAR, AZTI), France (INRAE, IFREMER), Netherlands (NIOZ, Deltares, MARIS), Germany (PANGAEA), Italy (OGS), United Kingdom (U. Sheffield, MBA), Sweden (SMHI), Finland (SYKE), Norway (IMR), Denmark (AU), Greece (HCMR), Romania (NIMRD), Ukraine (UkrSCES), Bulgaria (BUP), Czech Republic (CMMI), as well as international organizations such as ICES, reinforcing the pan-European character of the EMODnet Biology project.<\/p>\n

After the second day of work, the project partners visited the main facilities of IHCantabria, including specialized laboratories, and the Great Tank of Maritime Engineering of Cantabria (CCOB), a unique infrastructure for full-scale experimentation that allows testing innovative solutions for adaptation to climate change and coastal protection. Parallel activities were also carried out, such as an institutional visit to the Cantabrian Maritime Museum, which highlighted the relationship between marine data and one of the first Marine Biology Stations, highlighting the historical role of this museum as one of the first institutions to promote research and knowledge of the marine environment in the region. <\/p>\n

Importance of EMODnet<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) is a network of organizations supported by the EU’s integrated maritime policy. It currently has more than 130 partners from 33 countries and brings together more than 600 data providers and aggregators. Its mission is based on the FAIR principles (Acronym that stands for Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability), aimed at improving the reuse of scientific and academic data, EMODnet relies on international standards and tools developed together with infrastructures such as EurOBIS and LifeWatch ERIC, using the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) as a taxonomic reference. <\/p>\n
