The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria<\/a>) reaffirms its commitment to the transfer of knowledge at all educational levels and participates in the educational day held on May 7 as part of the Global Classrooms Program, organized by the Ministry of Education of the Government of Cantabria. This program, which has been operating in Cantabria for more than fifteen years, aims to bring the UN closer to the educational field. <\/p>\n

The conference, which took place at the Caja Cantabria Foundation (CASYC) in Santander, was inaugurated by IHCantabria consultant Beatriz Tejerina, with an opening lecture on the responsible use of water resources. In her presentation, given entirely in English, Tejerina addressed some of the main global challenges related to water, such as water scarcity, increasing demand, risks associated with droughts and floods, and the impact of climate change on water resources. She also presented examples of tools developed by IHCantabria to support sustainable water management and climate risk planning, highlighting the role of science and technology in decision making. <\/p>\n

The topics for discussion are chosen annually by the centers and are always related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this year the central theme is “raising awareness for a responsible use of water resources”.<\/p>\n

Students from fourteen secondary schools in Cantabria and Madrid participated in this first Cantabria-Madrid Interregional Conference, acting as delegates from the member countries of three key UN committees – FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), WHO (World Health Organization) and ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) – leading the committees and using the English language as a tool.<\/p>\n

In Cantabria, several secondary schools and the Regional Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Universities have been collaborating to develop this program since 2007, promoting the enhancement of personal, social and linguistic skills of the students of the schools involved.<\/p>\n
