“Coastal zones are under pressure from climate change: transformative adaptation is needed” is the title of the final workshop of the European Coastal Climate Core Services<\/em> (CoCliCo) project, held in Brussels, Belgium, on June 24-25.<\/p>\n

This workshop focused on the challenges of climate change in coastal zones and the need to improve decision-making in coastal risk management. The meeting brought together representatives of scientific institutions and policy makers from all over Europe. The Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria<\/a>) had a prominent participation in this workshop, with the participation of Alexandra Toimil<\/a>, principal investigator of the CoCliCo project at IHCantabria, Melisa Men\u00e9ndez<\/a>, head of the Marine Climate and Climate Change Group at IHCantabria, and H\u00e9ctor Lobeto<\/a>, researcher of the same group.<\/p>\n

IHCantabria’s scientific participation in the closing of the CoCliCo project <\/strong><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the workshop, on June 24, Melisa Men\u00e9ndez participated in a round table with other leaders of different work packages established in the project, presenting the main achievements of this project, the lessons learned and the main messages of political interest. Key aspects on the integration of scientific knowledge in decision making and on the joint design of useful tools for planners, technicians and policy makers were addressed in this debate.<\/p>\n

The contribution of IHCantabria in this project has been crucial for its development, since the institute has been the one that has estimated the climatic conditions and the coastal hazard, both for the current situation and for different future scenarios of climate change evolution. To this end, it has developed the climatic databases and modeled coastal flooding along the entire coast of Europe with very high spatial resolution.<\/p>\n

A European platform for coastal risk management <\/strong><\/p>\n

IHCantabria has led the climate-related work package in this project and co-led, together with the University of East Anglia, the coastal hazards work package. The objective of both packages has been to provide Europe with advanced climate services to assess flood and erosion risk at local and regional level, in order to offer sustainable adaptation solutions.<\/p>\n

The final product of the project is the development of an open web platform (https:\/\/platform.coclicoservices.eu\/)<\/a>, which facilitates access to climate data on extreme sea levels, provides information on flooding, exposure and vulnerability in the coast, so that it constitutes a tool for estimating coastal risks, supporting decision making for managers. The platform developed under the CoCliCo project seeks to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities, improving territorial planning and prevention in the face of future climate scenarios. In addition, a simplification of the products developed and part of the information available on the platform have been transferred to the European platform EDITO <\/a>(European Digital Twin Ocean<\/em>).<\/p>\n

About CoCliCo <\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n

CoCliCo is part of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, within the area of climate action, environment and resource efficiency. Coordinated by the Bureau de Recherches G\u00e9ologiques et Mini\u00e8res<\/em>(BRGM<\/a>) of France, this project has involved the participation of research centers from six European countries, including IHCantabria, from Spain. Its execution period has been from September 2021 to September 2025.<\/p>\n
