box_shadow_blur_tablet=&#8221;40px&#8221; box_shadow_spread_tablet=&#8221;0px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria <a href=\"https:\/\/ihcantabria.com\/en\/\">(IHCantabria<\/a>) have conducted an experimental study to analyze how marsh vegetation, in particular the species <em>Spartina maritima<\/em>, can contribute to the trapping of floating plastic debris in estuaries.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the study, which have been recently published in the journal <em>Marine Pollution Bulletin<\/em>, provide new knowledge about the physical processes that favor the retention of plastics in these transitional ecosystems, between rivers and oceans. The following IHCantabria researchers are co-authors of the scientific article: <a href=\"https:\/\/ihcantabria.com\/en\/staff-directory\/paula-nunez-perez\/\">Paula N\u00fa\u00f1ez P\u00e9rez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ihcantabria.com\/en\/staff-directory\/laura-perez-garcia\/\">Laura P\u00e9rez Garc\u00eda<\/a>, Seyed Meysam Rezaee (who participated in part of the study, when he was linked as a predoctoral researcher at IHCantabria), <a href=\"https:\/\/ihcantabria.com\/en\/staff-directory\/javier-francisco-barcena-gomez\/\">Javier F. B\u00e1rcena<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ihcantabria.com\/en\/staff-directory\/andres-garcia-gomez\/\">Andr\u00e9s Garc\u00eda G\u00f3mez<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study referred to in the scientific article consisted of a series of laboratory experiments carried out in a hydraulic channel in IHCantabria.
