Juanes de la Pe\u00f1a<\/a>, held a meeting today with the Spanish Ambassador in San Jos\u00e9 de Costa Rica, Eva Mart\u00ednez S\u00e1nchez, together with representatives of the Spanish Cooperation in Costa Rica and the University of Costa Rica (UCR), as part of his visit to this Central American country, to participate in meetings and workshops related to the project “Marinas Limpias CR”. The meeting was also attended by researcher B\u00e1rbara Ondiviela<\/a>, member of the Coastal Ecosystems group at IHCantabria, and UCR Professor Felipe Calleja, who is the project coordinator and a graduate of the IH2O Doctoral Program at the University of Cantabria (UC). <\/p>\n In this Central American country, coastal tourism plays a crucial role in its economy and national identity, so it is essential to ensure the environmental management of marinas and nautical activities. The “Marinas Limpias CR” project, led by the Maritime, Rivers and Estuaries Engineering Unit of the University of Costa Rica (IMARES-UCR) and financed by the External Cooperation Fund 2022 of the Vice Rector’s Office for Research of the University of Costa Rica, offers to contribute to the promotion of environmental sustainability and responsible tourism development in Costa Rica, through international collaboration. <\/p>\n The main objective of this project is to analyze and manage the risk to water quality in Costa Rica’s marinas; its importance lies in the integrated approach it proposes. Representatives of the Maritime, River and Estuarine Engineering Unit (IMARES-UCR) of the University of Costa Rica, the Interinstitutional Commission of Marinas and Tourist Berths (CIMAT) -which acts as a national entity and liaison with the marinas of Costa Rica-, the Coastal Observation and Forecasting System of the Balearic Islands (SOCIB) and IHCantabria are participating in the development of this project. <\/p>\n The main beneficiaries of the project are the managers of national marinas, who will receive specific recommendations to improve the environmental management of their facilities and ensure a safe and healthy environment for visitors and marine life. Another beneficiary of the project is CIMAT, the ultimate recipient of specific tools and protocols to monitor and maintain water quality in marinas over time. <\/p>\n The development of this project includes three stages. The first is focused on knowledge transfer, in which experts from IHCantabria and SOCIB have shared this week their experience and knowledge with port managers, local administrations and NGOs. In the second stage, a diagnosis will be made on water quality and associated risks in different marinas, leading to the third and final phase of the project in which management measures will be formulated, which will be reflected in a guide of good practices. <\/p>\n The establishment of this international collaboration network between IMARES-UCR, CIMAT, IHCantabria and SOCIB will lay the groundwork for future research and environmental management initiatives in the maritime sector. Juanes de la Pe\u00f1a<\/a>, ha mantenido hoy una reuni\u00f3n con la embajadora de Espa\u00f1a en San Jos\u00e9 de Costa Rica, Eva Mart\u00ednez S\u00e1nchez, junto a representantes de la Cooperaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola en Costa Rica y de la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), como parte de su visita a este pa\u00eds centroamericano, para participar en reuniones y talleres relacionados con el proyecto \u201cMarinas Limpias CR\u201d. En el encuentro tambi\u00e9n participaron la investigadora B\u00e1rbara Ondiviela<\/a>, integrante del grupo de Ecosistemas Litorales de IHCantabria, y el Profesor de la UCR Felipe Calleja, quien es coordinador del proyecto y egresado del Programa de Doctorado IH2O de la Universidad de Cantabria (UC).<\/p> En ese pa\u00eds centroamericano, el turismo costero desempe\u00f1a un papel crucial en su econom\u00eda e identidad nacional, por lo que es fundamental garantizar la gesti\u00f3n ambiental de los puertos deportivos y de la actividad n\u00e1utica. El proyecto \u201cMarinas Limpias CR\u201d, liderado por la Unidad de Ingenier\u00eda Mar\u00edtima, de R\u00edos y Estuarios de la Universidad de Costa Rica (IMARES-UCR) y financiado por el Fondo de Cooperaci\u00f3n Externa 2022 de la Vicerrector\u00eda de Investigaci\u00f3n de la Universidad de Costa Rica, ofrece contribuir en la promoci\u00f3n de la sostenibilidad ambiental y el desarrollo tur\u00edstico responsable en Costa Rica, mediante la colaboraci\u00f3n internacional.<\/p> El principal objetivo de este proyecto es analizar y gestionar el riesgo para la calidad del agua en las marinas de Costa Rica; su importancia radica en el enfoque integral que propone. En el desarrollo de este proyecto participan representantes de la Unidad de Ingenier\u00eda Mar\u00edtima, de R\u00edos y de Estuarios (IMARES-UCR) de la Universidad de Costa Rica, la Comisi\u00f3n Interinstitucional de Marinas y Atracaderos Tur\u00edsticos (CIMAT) \u2212que act\u00faa como ente nacional y enlace con los puertos deportivos de Costa Rica\u2212, el Sistema de Observaci\u00f3n y Predicci\u00f3n Costero de las Islas Baleares (SOCIB) e IHCantabria.<\/p> Los principales beneficiarios del proyecto son los gestores de las marinas nacionales, quienes recibir\u00e1n recomendaciones espec\u00edficas para mejorar la gesti\u00f3n ambiental de sus instalaciones y asegurar un entorno seguro y saludable para los visitantes y la vida marina. Otro beneficiario del proyecto es la CIMAT, receptora \u00faltima de herramientas y protocolos espec\u00edficos para monitorear y mantener la calidad del agua en las marinas, a lo largo del tiempo.<\/p> El desarrollo de este proyecto incluye tres etapas. La primera est\u00e1 enfocada en la transferencia de conocimientos, en la que los expertos de IHCantabria y SOCIB han compartido esta semana su experiencia y conocimientos con gestores portuarios, administraciones locales y ONGs. En la segunda etapa se realizar\u00e1 un diagn\u00f3stico sobre la calidad del agua y los riesgos asociados en diferentes marinas, dando paso a la tercera y \u00faltima fase del proyecto en la que se formular\u00e1n medidas de gesti\u00f3n, que se plasmar\u00e1n en una gu\u00eda de buenas pr\u00e1cticas.<\/p> El establecimiento de esta red de colaboraci\u00f3n internacional entre IMARES-UCR, CIMAT, IHCantabria y SOCIB sentar\u00e1 las bases para futuras iniciativas de investigaci\u00f3n y gesti\u00f3n ambiental en el sector mar\u00edtimo.
