Biography

Sebastián Solari is Associate Professor at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Engineering of the University of the Republic (Uruguay) since 2016. Civil Engineer by the University of the Republic (2006), Master in Environmental Hydraulics (2008) and Doctor in Biogeochemical Flow Dynamics and its Applications (2011) by the University of Granada. He has received the extraordinary award for doctoral thesis from the University of Granada in the area of Engineering and Architecture (academic period 2011-2012) and the award for best doctoral thesis in Civil Engineering (2012 edition), awarded by the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay. In 2015 he won the De Paepe-Willems Award, granted by The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC), and in 2018 the Young Scientist Award (Coastal Management), granted by KIOST, KSCDP, JCR and CERF.

His work focuses on the study and solution of coastal and port (river and maritime) problems from a civil engineering standpoint, and his main line of research is the development and application of probabilistic techniques to quantify the uncertainty inherent to these systems. At the same time, he has developed different lines of work around the implementation of numerical models and field measurements to understand and model these systems, with special focus on open sand beaches and the mouths of rivers, streams and coastal lagoons. In these thematic lines I have been responsible for undergraduate and graduate courses, tutor of master and doctoral theses, responsible for research projects funded by research agencies and responsible for advisory agreements with companies and public and private organizations.

He is a reviewer of more than 20 international scientific journals in the areas of hydraulic engineering, coastal engineering, wind engineering and renewable energies, among others; evaluator of national and international calls for proposals; member of the scientific committee of several regional and international events.
