Marine Operations

The study and optimisation of marine operations has as its primary objective to contribute to improving the safety of the activities that take place during all phases of the life of a marine structure, as well as to minimise the associated costs.

One of our main lines of action at IHCantabria is the numerical and experimental analysis of marine operations: (i) installation and dismantling of offshore structures, (ii) operation and maintenance activities of offshore structures, (iii) the transport of special parts for wind farms or other offshore installations.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Study of operations in offshore wind farms to increase safety and reduce LCOE

We study the accessibility to offshore wind structures.
We design innovative systems to improve accessibility and reduce downtime.
We adapt the access systems to different meteoceanic scenarios.
We analyse the transportability and/or behavior at sea of O&M devices.

Study of maritime works maneuvers

At IHCantabria we support the entire life cycle for the construction of vertical dikes by means of prefabricated caissons in floating dock, including design, optimization, construction, installation and operation.
We carry out field campaigns to monitor maneuvers to transport and anchor pieces in maritime and offshore projects.
We carry out experimental models in wave tank to simulate anchoring strategies for special components (e.g. jackets, caissons, GBF), as well as coupling strategies for special pieces to characterize their behavior at sea and identify operating thresholds.
We development ad-hoc numerical models to analyze and optimize special parts for maritime and offshore engineering projects, as well as to optimize the different phases of the anchoring process.
We develop of operational systems to support the development of marine operations, aimed at reducing the uncertainties of each of the phases of a maritime project (tender, design and execution).
We analyse the effect that the transport and anchoring process has on the final cost of the project, the execution time and safety.
We improve the environmental impact, deadlines and costs of executing a project.
We analyse the interaction between floating elements during the transport maneuver and construction.
We analyse the hydrostatic stability during transport and anchoring maneuvers.
We analyse the constraints and limitations to improve control over transport and anchoring maneuvers.

SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS

SIGNIFICANT PROJECTS

ACCEDE

ACCEDE will integrate different experimental and numerical techniques for the calculation of BLS, as well as for their design by means of advanced methodologies for the evaluation of the expected degradation processes that limit their useful life. This project aims to make a leap in the current technique by combining two major disciplines such as Materials Science and Fluid Mechanics.

DOVICAIM

The final years of the 20th century saw the generalized use of floating caissons in port structures: docks and other docking structures, vertical shelters and special floating docks. The Dovicaim project has developed a methodology for designing and optimizing the life cycle of caissons in maritime structures.

POSEIDOM

POSEIDOM develops a tool that will allow to evaluate and optimize the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) strategy in a more adequate and efficient way.

IDERMAR

An innovative service in the global market, allowing the customer to obtain accurate and certified resource data (e.g. wind, waves, currents), without having to deal with major technological or economic risks using floating meteorological masts.
