The EGU General Assembly is Europe’s largest geoscience meeting, bringing together more than 18,000 experts from around the world to discuss the planet’s major challenges

From April 27 to May 2, 2025, Vienna (Austria) hosted a new edition of one of the most important scientific events in the field of Earth, planetary and space sciences: the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). In this year’s edition, the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (IHCantabria) has stood out for the participation of a large group of researchers, who have presented the most recent advances of their work in key areas such as climate change, marine and coastal environment management, earth observation and natural hazards.

The EGU General Assembly, held at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV) and also in online format, is the central event of this European organization dedicated to promoting scientific excellence in the geosciences. This multidisciplinary meeting annually welcomes thousands of participants from all over the world and addresses topics as diverse as planetary exploration, the Earth’s atmosphere, climate, natural resources and natural disasters.

Ignacio Aguirre Ayerbe, Esther Barrios Crespo, Manuel del Jesus Peñil, Paula Gomes da Silva, Dina Vanesa Gómez Rave, Farzad Hosseini, Mario Luiz Mascagni, María del Carmen Millán Roldán, Paula Núñez Pérez, Itxaso Odériz Martínez, Cristina Prieto Sierra, Diego Armando Urrea Méndez traveled to Vienna, Austria, to participate in person, representing IHCantabria, in various scientific sessions of EGU2025. Another group also participated in the online format, to contribute with their knowledge to the international exchange of ideas, methodologies and solutions.

IHCantabria’s participation in EGU2025 reinforces its commitment to scientific research of excellence and its practical application to the great global challenges related to the environment, territory and sustainability.

About EGU

The European Geosciences Union, founded in 2002 and based in Munich, Germany, is the leading European organization in the field of geosciences. It is a non-profit, interdisciplinary scientific association that promotes research and the dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of society and the planet.

During his stay in Vienna, he also participated in meetings organized by the Global Tsunami Model (GTM) Association to coordinate actions focused on tsunami hazard and risk assessment

Cristina Prieto Sierra participated as a guest speaker at EGU2025 and organized various sessions on uncertainty, hydrological risks, and the history of hydrology. She is also the Scientific Director of the Hydrometeorological Risks Division and leads the “Hydrological Design and Communication,” “Water Resources Management and Drought,” and “History of Hydrological Modeling” groups at the International Association for Hydrological Sciences (IAHS). Representing IHCantabria, researchers Paula Gomes da Silva (center of the photo) and Ana Silió Calzada (who participated online) contributed as co-organizers to the session titled “Remote sensing for coastal zone monitoring: New methods, uncertainty and impacts,” as did Xavier Monteys (Geological Survey Ireland) and Salvatore Savastano (IsardSat), who are located on the left and right sides of the photo, respectively

Predoctoral researcher Mario Luiz Mascagni, currently conducting a research stay at IHCantabria, also presented an oral communication at EGU2025

IHCantabria researchers traveled to Vienna, Austria, to share their progress in developing key lines of research for EGU2025, such as those related to climate change, marine and coastal environmental management, terrestrial observation, natural hazards, and the contribution of their work. in hydroclimatology.
