Hidrodinámica y morfodinámica de estuarios

IH Cantabria is developing innovative research to unravel the functioning of estuaries over short and long temporal scales. To achieve this aim we are testing the ability of numerical models to reproduce a series of test cases dealing with both hydrodynamics and morphodynamics. With respect to hydrodynamics we are currently assessing the validity of different "wet and dry" schemes, and the morphological implications of using depth-averaged or 3D algorithms also in the presence of vegetation (in collaboration with Ghen University, Belgium). With respect to morphodynamics we are reproducing laboratory experiments of tidal channel development under controlled conditions. Once hydro- and morphodynamics have been validated we will explore bio-geomorphic interactions and the effect of climate change on the long-term evolution of estuarine systems.
