Iñaki Silanes has a degree in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU), and a PhD in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry from the same University. He joined the IH in May 2010 as a member of the IT team, and his main task is to manage the center's supercomputing resources.

Previously Iñaki worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), and in the IT service of the Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA).

15 años de experiencia en Planificación Hidrológica e Ingeniería Hidráulica. Comenzó su carrera en la Universidad de Cantabria, desarrollando asistencias técnicas a empresas y organismos públicos, así como proyectos de I+D relacionados con la ingeniería de puertos y costas. Después trabajó cuatro años en la empresa SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A., como responsable de área de negocio, director de proyectos e ingeniero especialista.

Desde 2004 ha trabajado como consultor independiente en Planificación Hidrológica e Ingeniería Hidráulica, principalmente para organismos públicos. A partir del año 2008, su actividad ha estado ligada al Instituto de Hidráulica Ambiental de Cantabria: en proyectos de hidrología, abastecimiento y saneamiento, riesgos y cambio climático, gobernanza y gestión del agua, ingeniería de costas, etc.

Alba Cid has a degree in Marine Science (Vigo University) and an M.Sc. in Integrated Coastal Zone Management (IH Cantabria, University of Cantabria). The master's training period was carried out at Prointec, S. A., in the Coasts and Ports department.

Currently, Alba is a PhD student at the Science and Technologies for Coastal Management department and her research focuses on the development of  high resolution current databases; for this purpose different numerical models are being used.

Mirian Jiménez is a predoctoral researcher at IH Cantabria. After obtaining her degree in Marine Sciences in 2007 from the University of Vigo, she was accepted in the Masters program on "Integrated Coastal Zone Management" at the University of Cantabria. She developed an internship in the Department of Ports and Coasts at the company "KV Consultants Engineering, Projects and Installations, SL"

In 2009 she joined the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics at the University of Cantabria for the obtention of a Ph.D. in the "Science and technology for the management of the coast " program. She is currently developing her PhD project with a predoctoral grant provide by the "Environmental Hydraulics Institute of Cantabria Foundation".

Since joining  IH Cantabria she has been involved in several studies, mainly focused on the long-term morphodynamics and analysis of climate change effects in the estuarine environment. Her doctoral research is being directed by Sonia Castanedo and Raúl Medina and  focuses on the long-term evolution of tidal channel networks in estuaries.

Tamara Rodríguez Castillo, has a Degree in Environmental Sciences from the University of Alcalá (2004/2009). She joined the research staff of IH Cantabria with a predoctoral grant from the University of Cantabria (UC) in June 2010.

Initially she carried out an internship`within her Master's Degree in Environmental Management for Water Systems (UC). In March 2011 she presented her Master's Thesis Research paper titled "Non-permanent water quality modeling in Arga River (Spain)".

In order to continue with the new investigation lines identified in her Master's Thesis Research, she enrolled in the PhD program "Science and Technology for Environmental Management of Water Systems" (UC). Currently she is working on her PhD on Water Quality Modeling in Freshwaters,  paying special attention to the shallow waters with a low index of renovation (backwaters in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, etc.) in order to have a better understanding of fluvial metabolisms.

Tamara collaborates with the IH Cantabria both internal research lines through different projects related to her thesis. In this context she has done several tasks of great scientific interest with which she has been able to collect many articles and specialized bibliography, field campaigns in rivers, deepen understanding and management of different numerical hydraulic models (HEC-RAS, ROMS,...) and water quality models (QUAL2K, WASP, ...) as well as tools for data processing and analysis of results (Matlab, ArcGIS, ...), etc.

MSc Ignacio Aguirre-Ayerbe holds a degree in Geography and a Master’s degree in environmental disasters and natural processes. He also has specific training in climate change adaptation and the use of geospatial tools and their application in the field of natural processes and related hazards, including master studies, specialization courses (Oxford Adaptation Academy-GCAP, United Nations University-EHS, among others) and a learning Ph.D.period. His research focuses on environmental risks, disaster risk reduction and management, evacuation modelling and planning, vulnerability and climate change adaptation, being particularly interested in working at community level.

He has carried out relevant risk and vulnerability-related tasks in several international projects (Latin America, Caribbean, European Union and Arab countries), including the assessments of vulnerability and risk to different natural hazards, such as tsunamis, floods, and climate change related hazards. He has performed multiple tasks within these projects, ranging from management and coordination, development of methodologies, report writing and the drafting of scientific publications, to those related directly to the use of geographic information systems, such as editing, development of methodologies and GIS work flows, execution and automation of geo-processes and final cartography. He has additionally taught courses and presented his work at conferences. His research activities include several conference proceedings and co-authorship in peer-review journals as the Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences. He works as a reviewer in the magazines Natural Hazards and Earth System Science and Journal of Maps.

He also has experience in areas related to the communication and dissemination of projects as well as working directly with local communities and policy makers from countries in which these projects were developed.

He participates in teaching the Master's Degree course in Coast and Port Engineering at the University of Cantabria.

Íñigo Aniel-Quiroga es bilbaino e Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos por la Universidad de Cantabria. Tras realizar cursos de intensificación en Ingeniería Litoral en el grupo de ingeniería oceanográfica de la Escuela de Caminos se incorporó al IH Cantabria dentro del grupo de Costas. Dentro de este grupo, Íñigo se dedica a la investigación en el campo de los tsunamis y ha colaborado en diversos proyectos internacionales relacionados con sistemas de alerta de tsunamis, cálculos de cota de inundación por tsunami, estudio de tsunamis generados por deslizamientos de tierra, etc. En estos proyectos desarrolla funciones como técnico de modelos de onda larga o redactor de artículos e informes.

Además de impartir varios cursos de modelación numérica, Íñigo también ha desarrollado la herramienta TSUSY que permite la propagación de tsunamis en tiempo real y ha publicado artículos sobre el tema en revistas internacionales.

Javier F. Bárcena (JaviB) is a PhD student at IH Cantabria who focuses his research on numerical modeling and methodology development within the field of estuarine hydrodynamics and water quality.

He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Cantabria, carrying out his last year  at  Technische Universiteit Delft (Delft, Netherlands). After graduating, he studied a Master of Science at the University of Cantabria in Environmental Water Systems Management, presenting his Master Thesis: "Calculation Procedure to define environmental risk zones due to industrial discharges in shallow water estuaries."

His investigation began in February 2008 by means of a predoctoral fellowship granted by  IH Cantabria, combining that task with master studies. Since August 2010 Javier Bárcena enjoys a scholarship Program Researcher Training (BES-2010-032763) from the Ministry of Science, associated with the research project QEST (CGL-2009-10620), where he collaborated and performed his Doctoral Thesis entitled "Development of a methodology for environmental risk zoning generated by the discharge of industrial wastewaters in estuarine areas". JaviB has participated in several contracts with the Administration and companies and in competitive research projects (VERTITOX, PORTONOVO, VULMA, ...). He is staff member of the Estuarine Coastal Sciences Association. Because of his research at IH Cantabria, he has published several articles in the Science Citation Index and participated in various international conferences.
