IH Cantabria viene desarrollando durante más de 15 años una línea activa en el ámbito de los Tsunamis y la evaluación de su impacto en zonas costeras. Una gran cantidad de estudios han sido llevados acabo alrededor del mundo, permitiendo adquirir una amplia experiencia y pericia para evaluar la peligrosidad, vulnerabilidad y riesgo en zonas costeras, mediante la elaboración de mapas de inundación a escala global y local, mapas de evacuación, la evaluación del impacto en infraestructuras portuarias, industriales y de protección costera, etc. Productos que han permitido llevar acabo la toma de decisiones respecto a la gestión del riesgo de tsunamis, y la implementación de medidas de mitigación (diseño de obras de protección, diseño de sistemas de alerta temprana, etc.).

IH Cantabria ha apostado por la investigación y el conocimiento como punto de partida para encarar la evaluación del riesgo de tsunamis, mediante el desarrollo de nuevos modelos numéricos, la propuesta de nuevas metodologías para evaluar la peligrosidad y el riesgo, y finalmente, la transferencia tecnológica de metodologías y herramientas, acompañadas de cursos de formación impartidos en distintos países.

La asesoría que el IH Cantabria brinda incluye desde la creación de guías metodológicas y la coordinación y supervisión de actividades para la realización de planes y estrategias de gestión integrada, al desarrollo mismo de los instrumentos de planificación de acuerdo a las necesidades de cada administración. - Desarrollo de un Plan de Gestión Integrada de Zonas Costeras entre Marsa Matruh y El Sallum, Egipto

TRABAJO REALIZADO: En la primera fase del proyecto se realizó un Diagnóstico Integrado de la zona costera, un Inventario de Actores, Leyes y Proyectos, un Sistema de Información Geográfica y el I Taller Participativo para la Gestión Integrada de la Costa Noroeste. Estos trabajos sirvieron de base para el desarrollo en la segunda fase del Plan de GIZC que incluyó la Evaluación Ambiental Estratégica del Plan, un Análisis de los Usos del Suelo y propuesta de Zonificación y una Evaluación de la Capacidad de Carga de la costa. Durante estas actividades se realizaron a su vez 4 talleres locales, 2 seminarios avanzados y el II Taller Participativo para la Gestión Integrada de la Costa Noroeste.

 

- Estrategia Española de la Sostenibilidad de la Costa

TRABAJO REALIZADO: Coordinación técnica y científica de los trabajos de diagnóstico integrado costero. Este diagnóstico se realizó por unidades de gestión e incluyó la evaluación del estado de los sistemas litorales playa, dunas, masas de agua de transición y planes urbanísticos. Además por cada unidad de gestión se identificaron las principales Debilidades, Amenazas, Fortalezas y Oportunidades. Además se realizó el diseño y la planificación de la Estrategia, está pendiente de su aprobación en segunda fase, y se identificaron las principales herramientas que se consideran necesarias para la aplicación de la Estrategia así como los Objetivos Estratégicos y Retos para las costas españolas.

 

- Inventario de Actores, Leyes e Instituciones para la Gestión Integrada de Zonas Costeras de España

TRABAJO REALIZADO :GIZC006Se realizaron una serie de talleres a nivel nacional y autonómico junto con un cuestionario tipo bola de nieve con el objetivo de identificar los principales agentes de la costa a nivel nacional, autonómico y local y conocer su opinión sobre el estado de la costa y los principales problemas que la afectan. Los resultados fueron analizados y presentados a la Comisión Europea como parte de la respuesta española a la Recomendación 413/2002. Este inventario se presentó bajo el formato de Base de Datos para su utilización por parte de los gestores costeros en la planificación de los procesos participativos que debieran realizar en los procesos gestión integrada costera.

 

- Prediagnóstico Costero del Programa de Manejo Integrado de Zonas Costeras de El Salvador

TRABAJO REALIZADO: Se realizó un Pre-Diagnóstico Integrado consistente en el análisis de la información técnica proveniente de planes e informes locales y nacionales junto con la información local obtenida a través de una serie de talleres participativos con actores locales en los que se discutieron los principales temas claves, sus causas y los actores más relevantes que se encuentran involucrados en su gestión. Este Pre-Diagnóstico ha de servir como base para la realización de Programa de Manejo Integrado de las Zonas Costeras de El Salvador.

IH Cantabria has gained broad experience in the areas of marine dynamics, coastal dynamics, management of coastal erosion problems, regeneration projects beach and dune, environmental impact during dredging and the impact of dredging ditches and canals in coastal navigation over its 25 years in the field.

All this experience has allowed IH Cantabria to develop new methods and numerical tools such as Coastal Modelling System (SMC), which produces reliable results for technical studies of coastal related issues such as beach regenerations: Diagnosis, Pre-design (blueprint), design (project) and Monitoring and evaluation of the works, providing environmentally sound solutions which are compatible with the functionality and stability of the proposed alternatives.

IH Cantabria can carry out its service anywher in the worls, with dynamic wave, tidal and meteorological and astronomical rise of sea level databases. These databases are obtained numerically through reanalysis, calibrated and validated with satellite data and instrumental data, while at the same time providing numerical methodologies and tools developed to conduct studies of high quality and precision.

TASKS: This is a study of coastal protection against erosion Tunisia. Specifically, we have studied in detail the current situation and the alternatives protection of the coast stretching from Dar Chaabane Béni Khiar up on the Gulf of Hammamet. The aim is to ensure the protection of existing infrastructure and buildings on the waterfront, and the establishment of a stable and suitable for beach tourism use (bathing, water sports, sunbathing, etc.). This project includes the adaptation of the SMC to the Tunisian coast, and its technology transfer and technical training of management and local research centers.

TASKS: In this work, the condition of a dredging seawall near the Port of Gijón, in the morphodynamics and adjacent works, allowing the design and establishment of maximum trench dredging support stability Xivares beach and the design criteria of adjacent works (breakwater and outfall). The study characterizing the dynamics in marine dredging area, series 60 (waves, currents, winds and sea levels), design of trench dredging, based on a  evolution and morphodynamic probability analysis model of the impact of the evolution of the trench.

 

- Integral Study of the beach and dunes of Maspalomas (Gran Canaria)image016

TASKS: Due to the reduced volume of sand dune field of Maspalomas (Canary Islands, Spain), in this work, a comprehensive study of the beaches and dune field, analyzing, both from a standpoint morphodynamic as environmental causes and future evolution of this coastal section. Among the tasks the following were carried out: marine dynamics study on the current situation, as well as past morphological configurations; geomorphological and sedimentological analysis of the area; study of marine biocenosis and vegetation dynamics modeling wind dune field in  current situation and its evolution in the past decades;  morphodynamic model system approach on beaches and dune field, assessing current and future stability,and finally design of the proposed improvement and restoration activities for the dune-beach system.

 

- Study of Regeneration morphodynamic the Barcelona Olympic BeachesSERErosion019

CLIENT: Phase II UTE Barcelona Beaches

TASK: In this work, a study of regeneration of a series of urban beaches, the beaches of Barcelona Olympic. Which are 7 beaches comprising a total of 4.5 km of coastline (La Barceloneta, Somorrostro, Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella and New Creation). As part of the work a characterization of the marine S dynamics was created using the SMC software developed by IH. A proposed morphodynamic solution and necessary grains were determined to comply with the conditions of beach width established by the General Costas Directorate, along with the design of a set of containment works.

IH Cantabria has extensive experience in the design and production of all types of monitoring campaigns in coastal areas, which together with numerical and physical models, and the multidisciplinary nature of IH Cantabria's researchers and staff, give IH Cantabria the comprehensive knowledge of the processes and dynamics governing these complex environments.
A wide range of monitoring systems are used at IH Cantabria, including standard methods of in situ measurements (GPS, pressure and kinematic sensors, collection and analysis of water column samples, etc.) and quasi-real-time video monitoring systems  sistema HORUS.
IH Cantabria offers a set of monitoring systems that provide high temporal and spatial resolution, the ability to address a wide range of studies, including:

What is the water level reached once every 100 years on a beach? How many hours per yeardoes the supratidal zone of an estuary become flooded?

To answer these questions, IH Cantabria has developed methodologies, databases, statistics and numerical tools to determine the flood risk on the coast due to the joint action of marine dynamics (waves, wind, tidal), river and tsunamis.

IH Cantabria has extensive experience in Spain (having been awarded the National Environmental Prize in 1998 for the "Atlas of the Spanish Coast Flood") in statistical evaluations and downscaling of quantified statistical models.  The researchers at IH Cantabria have conducted numerous studies for consulting firms and different governments over the last 20 years. Recently, IH Cantabria has concluded the coastal high spatial resolution Flood Atlas for Spain and Brazil using 60 years of tidal wave and weather reanalysis databases.

TASKS: Developing a flood Atlas and the generation of a database for reanalysis along the Brazilian coast, validated with satellite and tide gauge data. The study helped determine the sea level for any point on the coast and the flood level (run-up) on  beaches along the Brazilian coast. This work is part of the international cooperation project (SMC-Brazil), which aims to improve technological transfer of the Coastal Modelling System (SMC) and its adaptation to the Brazilian coast.

Over the years, IH Cantabria has developed numerical methods and tools to be used in all aspects of planning and response to oil spills. Oil spills are a serious problem affecting coastal and marine environments,a problem which is increasing on a yearly basis together with the increment in shipping and mining activities or due to the exploitation and management of fuel derived products. As a result of this threat and in order to protect the coastline and to reduce potential impacts, both environmental and socio-economic, increasingly stringent regulations are being implemented worldwide. IH Cantabria provides technical advice and information to managers and companies to develop contingency plans that comply with current regulations and include the latest scientific and technical advances.

The services offered include assistance on: development of contingency plans, risk assessment of pollution, use of anti-pollution barriers, physical endurance test of barriers, development of operational systems (real-time) spill trajectory prediction (forward and reverse (backtraking)), environmental impact assessment, and the design and development of emergency oil spill drills.

TASK: TESEOVigía is a web application that runs on a remote server. A user from any computer with an Internet connection can access the server and make predictions. - Study of oil spill scenarios in the refinery of Gibraltar-San Roque CEPSA (Spain)Derr HI004

TASK: We have developed an operational spill trajectory prediction, called Athena-RGSR. The web application is running on a remote server. Faced with a possible spill in the Bay of Algeciras, the system can predict its trajectory in the short term (36 hours) considering ocean-meteorological predictions provided daily by data providers systems in real time.

One of IH Cantabria´s main work areas is the development and implementation of environmental monitoring and control programs for freshwater, estaurine and coastal water systems. The teams abilities range from the actual design of the field campaigns to the statistical treatment of the data all the while incorporating our diverse experience in water, biota, and sediment sampling techniques (riverside vegetation, phytoplancton, estaurine vegetation, invertebrates, macroalgae, fish, etc). These techniques and others are also applied to physical-chemical and biological indices to study the ecological state (Water Framework Directive), the state of conservation (Habitat Directive) or port water quality (ROM 5.1).

Over the last 20 years IH Cantabria has been developing full-scale monitoring systems of coastal structures (natural and/or artificial) with three objectives :

  • the development of new design technologies based on modeling without scale effects,
  • maintenance of early warning and monitoring systems
  • monitoring of the risk evolution of real structures throughout their life-span.

Using both commercial technologies (GPS, doppler anemometry, buoys accelerometer, pressure and kinematic sensors, remote sensing, etc.) as well as measurement techniques developed ad hoc, IH has accumulated extensive experience in several fields such as: monitoring of breakwaters other port structures, measuring of coastal met-ocean variables,  follow-up of sedimentary process on beaches and estuaries, dynamics of floating objects , etc . Real knowledge on the behaviour of coastal structures represents the final step of the design process and optimization, and complements the theoretical,  numerical and experimental work carried out to scale.

In the last decades IH Cantabria has dedicated an important amount of resources to developing its own next-generation numerical tools to study offshore wave transformation processes  and their effect on port infrastructures. By using these models developed internally , was added to a specific methodology for the analysis and design of coastal infrastructure based on the integration of the different tools and techniques existing study , to get maximum benefit in the identification of variables associated with the functionality and stability of infrastructure design, culminating in an optimal design and quality.

Amongst the numerical models developed by IH Cantabria we can find deep sea to shorelines wave propagation models such as MOPLA or IH-BOUSS. The latter is a nonlinear wave propagation model which uses Boussinesq equations and allows the study of the nonlinear transformation of waves off the coast for entire sea states. MSP and MANOLO models allow studying port resonance phenomena, both in its phase  integrated version (MSP) as well as in transitional phases (MANOLO) IH Cantabria  offers an extense range of Computational Fluid Dynamics models based on RANS equations both in two-dimensional  (IH-2VOF) and three dimensional versions (IH-3VOF e IH-FOAM), which allow the determination of the fotces that the wave exert on conventional and non-conventional structures, and the study of the variables related with the functionality of these structures, such as overtopping.
