Urban and industrial discharges on water systems

IH Cantabria intensively studies urban and industrial waste effluents in aquatic environments and its effects on them. This research focuses on the analysis of contaminant processes in the receiving environment, the development of methodologies to study the behavior of discharges, assessing their effects and their environmental mitigation, as well as the development of numerical tools that integrate the complexity inherent to the study of the behavior of pollutants in aquatic systems.

Among the polluting processes addressed in recent years are those related to fecal pollution, organic pollution caused by the nutrient supply or due to the introduction of suspended solids into the water system.

In order to respond to the new challenges posed by environmental legislation regarding chemical pollution of water, IH Cantabria has developed a numerical tool that enables studying the behavior  of priority substances and pollutants included in the 2008/105/CEE Directive in the receiving environment. Based on this tool, IH Cantabria has developed a methodology for establishing environmental mixing zones for industrial effluent discharges.
