Oil spills

IH Cantabria develops methodologies and numerical models to help fight oil pollution in the marine environment, both operationally and in response to a spill. Scientific developments in this field have led to participation in research projects, such as ESEOO (www.eseoo.org)"Establishment of an operational oceanographic Spanish system (VEM2003-C14-03), in which IH Cantabria developed operational forecasting system and transport of hydrocarbons THESEUS. Currently, we are working on two research projects related to this topic PLVMA  project (TRA2011-28900, National Plan, 2012-2014) and  SPRES project (INTERREG Atlantic Area, 2012-2014).
Amongst IH Cantabria main fields of research in this field, we can highlight the numerical modeling of the transport and degradation of oil based products, the application of stochastic models to forecast and hindcast (backtracking) of trajectories, the hybrid application of downscaling techniques (statistical and dynamic) for the development of high-resolution operational systems, operational and probabilistic prediction of the evolution of a sea based spills medium-long term, the development of methodologies to assess the risk of contamination when faced with an oil spill.
