Surf and swash zone hydrodynamics

Throughout the last decade, IH Cantabria has taken special interest in the study of hydrodynamic processes in the surf zone. This is experienced by the wave processes at different spatial and temporal scales when they break on the beach. these processes directly affect the behavior of sediment dynamics and evolution of the coastal seabed. We must therefore stress the importance of adequately studying these complex processes, with the ultimate goal of being able to ensure the sustainable development of the coastal environmental, the functional design of artificial structures, and the establishment of proper management of the coast.

IH Cantabria investigates the coupling of high resolution experimental work in the laboratory. The development of different projects and scientific breakthroughs have allowed proposing a new line of work for the study of the hydrodynamics of the surf zone using non simplified Navier-Stokes models. IH Cantabria has also developed a model based on extended Boussinesq equations, in order to integrate these into the Coastal Modelling System (SMC).
